Allergies & Mattress Care FAQ

allergies and mattress cleaning faq

1. What type of mattress is recommended for someone with seasonal or nightly allergies?

Given the frequency of allergy-related illnesses these days, a number of mattress manufacturers have taken steps to produce hypoallergenic products. Hypoallergenic mattresses work by preventing common allergens from settling into the fibers of the material where they can irritate your allergies night after night.

2. What kind of pillow is recommended for someone with allergies?

Similar to hypoallergenic mattresses, today’s hypoallergenic pillows are also effective at keeping pollen, pet dander, hair and other allergens out so you won’t have to worry about waking up with allergies every day.

3. Can you be allergic to a latex mattress?

It is possible to be allergic to a latex mattress. If you know of a latex allergy already, then you should avoid latex mattress products, even if they have a hypoallergenic cover that should keep you from coming into contact with the latex itself.

4. Can you be allergic to a memory foam mattress?

Although less common than latex allergies, it is possible to be allergic to memory foam mattresses as well. Each company has their own manufacturing processes for memory foam, but many of these foams do require latex. You should be able to find out from the manufacturer if their memory foam contains any common allergens.

5. How do I keep dust mites away?

The best way to prevent dust mites in your bed is with regular cleaning. You may vacuum your mattress or use specialized cleaning products to get the job done. You may also consider a dust-free cover for your mattress that will keep dust mites from getting all the way to the surface of the mattress itself. However, you will still need to clean this cover on a regular basis.

6. How often should a mattress be cleaned?

The best practice is to clean your mattress thoroughly twice a year. Plan on sleeping somewhere else for a night as you let the cleaning solutions do their work.

7. How do you clean a mattress?

Cleaning a mattress is a multi-step process. Start by stripping all bedding completely. Then vacuum the mattress top to bottom. Use a mild detergent to spot-clean any stains that are present, but never let water soak into the mattress. Finally, sprinkle baking soda over the mattress and let it sit for 24 hours before vacuuming it once more. This will completely deodorize your mattress. Finally, put a new cover on the mattress and make the bed.

8. If I keep my mattress covered, do I still need to clean it?

Even with a mattress cover, there could be dust and other debris that collects. It is best to completely strip the bed twice a year, even if it stays covered year round.
